Antique table and chair sets DO NOT EXIST
After specialising in genuine antique dining tables and antique dining chair sets for decades now, we can sincerely tell you that we could count the number of tables made together with a set of chairs surviving for 100+ years together to just a handful. This is due to the probate system through many generations of splitting household goods – Barbara got the chairs and Freddy got the table. This is also why there aren’t too many large sets of chairs surviving as these also were split up over the generations.More..
Professional Antique Furniture Restoration Is Rare Today
With the amount of antique furniture for sale on the internet today it begs the question of where are all the professional antique furniture restorers required to have spent dozens of hours on every piece to bring it up to a good standard. Antique furniture doesn’t often survive for 100+ year without losses, breakages, polish problems, etc. so the UK must have tens of thousands of professionally trained people working non stop you might imagine!? Well the answer is there are not, its more of a case that there are very few skilled workshops remaining with qualified cabinet makers & French polishers. So, who is restoring the millions of pieces of antique furniture you are seeing on the internet if not professional people? The answer is that 90% of what you find on the internet is not antique furniture of any merit anyway and the people selling are also amateur ‘restorers’ deploying patched up fodder with any technique that will allow a picture to be taken for the internet. Chewing gum, a spray coat of brown gunge to cover the problems and the words ‘beautifully restored and hand French polished..’ in the sales blurb!

Large Antique Dining Tables 3, 4, 5, 6 metres Long
Chances are if you own a house from the Georgian, Regency or Victorian periods that you also have a large dining room and hence need a large dining table. The modern market does offer reproduction factory made ‘style’ tables imported from Far East factories and of course furniture shops offer MDF veneered tables but for the most part in lengths up to around 2 metres. Fortunately much better value, quality solid timbers, hand made by skilled craftsmen and hand French polished there exists very large antique dining tables from all periods in oak, mahogany and walnut. In modern society we don’t gather frequently for large dinners with friends and family every day but if you own a large period house and its large dining room then chances are a modern table will look peculiar and certainly won’t be of a size seat 20 people smartly for Christmas! Genuine antique dining tables are terrific value, last a lifetime, are stunning pieces and have residual value. As many of our clients tell us having assessed the market that its pretty much a ‘no brainer’ all things considered. As the UKs only professional trade specialist in genuine large antique dining tables you can choose from a stock of over 400 antique tables of all sizes & periods and uniquely we hand finish to your specification to exactly the shade your require, match to a set of antique dining chairs from our stock of over 3000 or a sideboard, etc.

Antique Furniture Warehouse - Buying From A Trade Professional
Back in the 1980s antique furniture was the go to product for anybody furnishing a period home. Pretty much every market town had a range of antique shops and the emergence of the antique centre allowed hobbiest ‘dealers’ to emerge. Then came Ebay and before long the antiques market was a jungle of misinformation, fraudsters, amateurs and inflated prices. Basically, as analogy, anybody owing a spanner could claim to be a Corgi gas engineer! So not an easy market for the buyer to discern where the genuine antiques resided, how pricing was evaluated or who to trust. Quality antique furniture is unmatched by any other furnishing made in the modern era but in truth there are very few experts who can identify the factors that merit value of an antique piece. Hence the ridiculous market today where there is no pricing differential between a rusty Ford Capri and an Aston Martin because 99% of the time both Seller and Buyer have absolutely no knowledge to evaluate. So how do you avoid this lottery!?More..
Large Sets Antique Dining Chairs - 12, 14, 16, 20+
We specialise in large genuine sets of antique dining chairs with some 3000+ chairs in sets of 6 to 30 held in stock from all periods – Jacobean oak, Georgian & Regency mahogany through to Victorian & Edwardian in mahogany and oak.Uniquely, as service to all our clients, after careful restoration to the frames and jointing, we hand polish all chairs to be of even shade to match your table and offer in house upholstery in your chosen fabric or leather. This work is included in our prices which are the lowest in the UK for both standard of genuine antique chairs and the expert finishing provided - WE GUARANTEE!
The internet is littered with unrestored sets of dining chairs (leaving you a cost of some £150 per chair to make good), which often are not actually antiques at all and there are many companies simply offering crudely made antique ‘style’ (means ‘reproduction’) dining chairs which come from slave factories in the Far East and are frankly simply junk for a future bonfire!

Antique Partners Desks & Antique Library Tables
We can probably look back as far as George II in the mid 18th Century Chippendale period for the first antique partners desks although prior to this as early as William and Mary through Queen Anne and George periods there were small kneehole desks often in walnut veneers. The partners desk description comes from the format adopted by the legal profession where simply a desk was made finished both sides with drawers and cupboards to allow the ‘partners’ to work together. Of greater sizes than a standard desk, typically minimum 5ft wide, standard around 6ft and some up to 8ft wide.More..
Regency Pedestal Dining Tables
When considering the Regency pillar or pedestal dining table one immediately imagines the classic elegance of a slender formed top with reeded edges and refined pedestal bases of turned pillars/stems supported by sweeping sabre legs. These very formal tables by design originated in the early 19th Century during late George III and into George IV periods and later in the 19th Century the Victorians and Edwardians revived the design.Arguably the most formal and elegant of all antique dining table designs through history the Regency pedestal design has almost timeless appeal for grand dining room settings and offers very versatile seating with the inclusion of extension leaves with most tables. There are twin pedestal tables at 8ft to 10ft length, triple pedestals at 10ft to 18ft length.

ANTIQUE OAK DINING TABLES - REFECTORY & EXTENDING
Indigenous English oak has been the primary timber used for construction of tables in the UK throughout history. However In the period 1750 through to 1880 imported mahoganies became the fashion for formal dining tables but prior and post this period nearly all antique tables would be contructed from oak until the advent of veneered composite board (plywood) construction.
In terms of antique oak tables this 130 year period of mahogany saw massive changes in table design implemented so there are two starkly different categories of historic oak table design to consider. Prior to 1750 a grand house or institution would have a refectory table design and post 1880 it would be the Victorian oak extending table. Of course, there are the odd exceptions due to regional tastes and the standard farmhouse type refectory tables have always been made throughout all periods for smaller provincial homes.

ANTIQUE EXTENDING DINING TABLES
Other than antique plank top refectory tables it would be fair to say that all genuine antique dining tables through the periods Georgian, Regency and especially the Victorian had methods to allow extending a dining table. Initially in the 18th Century the technique was by gating legs and the use of extension sections know as 'leaves'. Into the early 19th Century Regency period famous cabinet makers Gillows and Wilkinson intoducted the runner sytem and concertina scissor action respectively and this offered the greater flexibilty our ancestors required to determine sociable table lengths suitable for the guest numbers attending dinner.More..
Regency Dining Tables Pedestal & Extending - Genuine or Fake Reproductions!?
The question of 'Where to buy Regency dining tables' throws up miriad of interesting facts that are best understood by these couple of points;- A search for 'Regency dining tables' on Google will bring up a whole host of companies claiming to be 'antque dining table' specialist who simply import containers of Third World slave factory made plywood reproductions/fakes. Yes, unbelievable but just look for the word 'STYLE' in their descriptions to understand that the item is not antique at all.
- Very few Regency pedastal dining tables were made and even fewer survive today. However it was a design revived by the late Victorians, through Edwardian times and into the early 1900's. So you can buy good quality hand craftsman made antique pedestal tables but very unlikely you'll strike upon a true Regency period pedestal table of any great size.
- There are Genuine Regency period dining tables surviving but these will be the Gillow & Co design on fine reeded legs, often as sectional console formed ends with runners or gating system, rather than the pedestal type. These are very rare too but there will be some choice up to 5 metres length.

Where to buy quality original antique dining tables in the UK
An internet search appears to reveal that there is plenty of antique furniture for sale across the UK but there are very few specialists to visit where you view a huge selection of original antique dining tables in mahogany, oak and walnut with all sizes from 6ft. 8ft, 10ft, 12ft, etc. and choice of farmhouse, refectory, pedestal and extending types all under one roof. If hunting for the really large extending tables to seat 14, 16, 18, 20 people or more, that once stood pride of place in the wealthy homes of the Georgian, Regency and Victorian eras, then actually can be a needle in a haystack! Indeed, with the amount of export there has been to USA, South Africa, Australia, etc. and the loss of many skilled French polishers it is little wonder that availability and simply the skill required to professionally polish a large quality antique dining table has made acquisition very difficult. However, if you are looking for an antique furniture dealer near London that specialises in original antique dining tables, holds the largest stock in the UK and French polishes all by hand to a customer’s specification….
